Vocabulary and Oral Comprehension—
—Mind in the Making

Children need to hear lots and lots of words to feed their hungry brains. Their absorbent minds are like little sponges and their brains are growing faster than at any other time on their lives! They are ready to learn and excited about hearing words that help them build a kind of architecture of language in their brains. We will show you how to systematically build your child’s vocabulary and interest in stories. And, the more words they hear in the early years, the more successful they will be as adults.

Sounds
& Letters

Children are eager to play with our language as they become more masterful in using it. As you play the games we demonstrate on this DVD, you will be amazed how quickly your child will build skills towards reading. Our reading experts give you clear demonstrations that engage the child in meaningful play with sounds and letters so they can learn to build words. You will learn why these skills are so important and the step-by-step process to build reading mastery in your child.

Children love to play these learning games with the sound and letter cards.

They quickly build their language skills.

Sounds: Breaking Words into Their
Sound Parts

Children love to play with sounds. In this next step towards reading mastery your child learns to identify the sounds they hear in spoken words. This essential skill called phonemic awareness builds a foundation for children to understand the foundations of sounds within words and, believe it or not, has been shown to be the single, most important, skill for learning to read. Building phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify and manipulate the smallest units of sounds in spoken words. Identifying rhymes, finding the beginning sound in a word and separating the spoken word "cat" into three distinct phonemes, /k/ /a/ /t/, are three ways your child will use phonemic awareness.

Letters: Translating Sounds into
Letters

The second most important skill for a young child learning to read and write is learning the alphabet. We will show you how to engage your child with fun activities that develop not only swift and sure knowledge of the letters and their sounds, but also understanding of the alphabetic principle, the concept that letters represent speech sounds.

In DVD 3 you will learn how to help your child take his newfound knowledge of sounds and letters and apply it to reading and writing, first words, then sentences and eventually full texts. Imagine the thrill of being there with your child when he reads his first words! We show you how to help your child take this magic step an then how to proceed systematically through useful sight words and how to approach multiple letter sound combinations, to ensure smooth sailing into total reading.

The Royal Road to Reading is a DVD series, developed by Montessori Master Teachers Mary Ellen Maunz and Randall Klein. It presents simple Montessori activities and lessons for you to use in your home or classroom when teaching young children to read.

A rich vocabulary is the first building block of learning to read. Children love to learn about the world around them, and learning the proper names for the things in their environments is fun and interesting. The Royal Road to Reading shows you how to expand your child’s vocabulary beyond the home and classroom.

As you keep feeding your child words and ideas about what you both enjoy learning, new concepts and interests are being born that will last a lifetime.

Building reading mastery at an early age provides the foundation for how children will learn and develop in the later years.

By completing lessons and working side by side with the child to teach fundamentals, parents and teachers not only pass on the ability to read, but also build a strong relationship with the child. The activities are interesting and fun, designed to pique the interest of each child at home, in the classroom or on a road trip.

Perfect for Teachers and Parents!

The Royal Road to Reading can be used by anyone working with young children. The methods taught and materials used in this series are simple and effective.

As a parent it is a great way to ensure that your child has a solid base for reading when they enter traditional kindergarten. If they are already being taught early reading concepts at a Montessori school, The Royal Road to Reading is a great reinforcement to those lessons.

Caspari and Maunz remained close friends and worked together from their initial meeting in 1979 up until Caspari’s passing in 2002. The legacy from Maria Montessori to Elisabeth Caspari to Mary Ellen Maunz is unbroken. Maunz has continued in teacher education since that time.

Maunz earned her M.Ed. in Integrative Education with an emphasis on Montessori from Endicott College, and she holds a BS in Child Development from the University of La Verne. She also holds an AMI Montessori diploma for ages 2½ – 7 and a Pan-American Montessori Society diploma for ages 6 – 12. Mother of three grown children, Mary Ellen’s great passion is exploring the deeper spiritual message of Maria Montessori. She loves to read, swim, and hike with friends and family.

Randall Klein
RANDALL KLEIN

Randall Klein, from Bozeman, Montana, completed his Montessori early childhood educator certification from Association Montessori Internationale in 1977 and taught in multi-aged Montessori preschool classrooms for sixteen years. He also holds a BA in German from Carroll University.

In 1986, Randall received the Master Teacher diploma from the Pan American Montessori Society and conducted numerous teacher training courses with his mentor, Dr. Elisabeth Caspari.

In 1993, he left the classroom to focus on developmentally appropriate early reading instruction as a reading coach, seminar leader, and tutor.

Randall has successfully taught hundreds of children from ages three to twenty how to read, and has used this experience to formulate the techniques and methods he now delivers to educators and parents in his literacy presentations and workshops.

In 2001, Randall co-authored a book entitled Learning to Read is Child’s Play for The Early Reading Company in Chicago.

It is Randall’s desire to create heightened awareness of the need for systematic, explicit, and developmentally appropriate reading instruction for beginning and struggling readers. He sees this as a form of intervention by which we can dramatically increase the reading readiness of all children, and thereby drastically reduce the instances of reading failure.

Randall finds special joy in the many opportunities he has each year to deliver the Montessori message and methods on early reading instruction to public school teachers throughout the country.
