4-Week Course

Montessori’s Sensorial and Cultural Materials

Sensorial is the second of four major avenues in Montessori’s plan for young children. Based on the need to touch, see, smell and hear, the sensorial avenue offers materials for children to systematically explore the environment through all the senses.

We will examine the materials as well as probe deeply into Montessori’s teaching that through sensory experiences the child actually constructs the intellect. This is an idea first suggested by Aristotle more than 2,000 years ago: “Nothing is in the intellect that was not first in the senses."

What you will learn:

  • A complete knowledge of the Sensorial Avenue
  • Fundamental qualities of all sensorial materials
  • Sensorial lessons with extensions
  • Roots of cultural studies
  • Unity of imagination and intellect

Course Description

Sensorial is the second of four major avenues in Montessori’s plan for young children. Based on the need to touch, see, smell and hear, the sensorial avenue offers materials for children to systematically explore the environment through all the senses.

We will examine the materials as well as probe deeply into Montessori’s teaching that though sensory experiences the child actually constructs the intellect. This is an idea first suggested by Aristotle more than 2,000 years ago: “Nothing is in the intellect that was not first in the senses."

In addition to the basic sense materials, sensorial also includes the introduction to geography, biology and geometry with simple, beautifully designed, hands-on materials. It is a rich area of Montessori’s early childhood classroom, providing experiences, vocabulary and a deep respect for the world around us.
