Practical Life and the Importance of Movement
While simple and often overlooked, Practical Life is the core of Montessori’s Early Childhood program. For many a children lessons in Practical Life will be among their first life experiences!
In this course you will learn:
- How to present lessons that provide an important link between home and school
- Activities from dusting to metal polishing, washing dishes and gardening
- About the development of concentration, coordination of movement and independence
- How to help the child learn responsibility for care of self, others and the environment
As Montessorians we should strive to develop our Practical Life areas to the fullest benefit of the children. Practical Life is one four major curriculum areas, that also include Sensorial, Language and Math. For most children starting in Montessori schools around the globe, lessons in practical life will be among their first experiences. These “humble tasks of daily living” can be done at home or school, from dusting and sweeping to metal polishing, washing dishes and gardening.
The essential point to keep in mind is that there are underlying purposes to these lessons, far beyond the mastery of any specific skill: the sense of order, concentration, coordination of movement and independence.
This course is PERFECT for Early Childhood teachers and expectant parents wanting to create learning environments at home.
